The One Day Film School is a practical filmmaking workshop that has ENABLED over 95,000 young people to make their first films since 2004.

It is Now available as a 13-week online skills activity for the duke of edinburgh’s award – bronze and silver.

You’ll be GUIDED BY PRE-RECORDED VIDEO LESSONs AND FUN PRACTICAL EXERCISES, LIKE HOW TO CREATE A PUNCH SOUND EFFECT – AND make FAKE BLOOD! NO FILMMAKING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

HAVING LEARNED THE ESSENTIALS, you’ll put your new filmmaking skills to the test with the 10 Shot Challenge AND makE A film USING your SMARTPHONE OR TABLET.

10 SHOT FILMS are eligible for the 10 Shot Film Awards: duke of edinburgh category. Entry guidelines are explained at the end of the course.

How much does it cost?

£29.99 per person (12 months’ access)

Can I do it by myself?

Most sessions can be completed solo, except fight choreography – the hidden angle (+2 people) CAMERA – 3 SHOT FILM (+2 PEOPLE) AND 10 shot challenge – FILMING. You can enlist family, friends (even pets).

What equipment do I need?

The video lessons need to be watched on a computer or device with internet connection. You’ll need a smartphone or tablet with edit software (ios – imovie, android – power director) for filming and editing.

How do I access the video lessons?

Once you’ve purchased the course (click here) you’ll receive a ‘welcome’ email with a link to get started. Simply click the link, create a password… and you’re in! You’ll also receive a student pack to help with planning. Access is for 12 months, so there’s no rush to finish.

What do I need to do beforehand?

To create a punch sound (week 2: punch sound creation) you’ll need to Hit a melon, piece of meat or wet cloth. For best results use a rolling Pin, mallet or cricket bat.

What about props and costume?

You’ll need Props (& possibly costumes) for week 3 (3 shot film) and weeks 6-9 (1o shot challenge). You can make your own props & costumes from scratch – especially for a sci-fi, period or fantasy film, so get creative!

How do I submit my 10 shot film for assessment / 10 shot awards consideration?

ONCE YOU’VE COMPLETED THE COURSE, please complete these 3 steps To submit your 10 Shot Film: 

Step 1: Enter your section details in eDofE. Any questions about this step, please contact [email protected] 

Step 2: Have your eDofE ID number to hand

Step 3. With adult supervision (parent, guardian or carer) upload your completed 10 Shot Film to Youtube as a private video. The default video privacy setting for creators aged 13-17 is private, but please do check. Click here for guidance on Youtube video privacy settings. Do not add a password, as this will delay the assessment process.

How different is this from the In Person workshop?

There’s loads of new material and activities – creating foley sound effects, making fake blood, rehearsals, location scouting, test screening, hosting your own premiere – which make it very different experience. Also you’ll have more time to plan, shoot and edit your 10 Shot Film, meaning a much better end result.
