How would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

of 10
The course and content seemed professionally executed and engaging, but I wasn’t sure if it would suit my purposes.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10
of 10
The course was ideal: I was able to break it down easily into a series of lessons and it allowed for differentiation, both in terms of ability and resources, meaning that all students were involved in active learning.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

10
of 10
It wasn’t just that the course was engaging (both in terms of film history/theory, but also in relation to practical lessons), but I was also reassured to have expert support on the end of a phone or email. Ed also went above and beyond, by taking part in student interviews as a professional film director and by being a judge in our student film festival.

I wondered how the online workshop would work and how the students would engage. I needn’t of worried.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

An excellent day for the students and incredibly easy for tutors to deliver. The students loved learning about the history of film and techniques and then transferring that knowledge into making their own 2 minute film. The transferable skills of organisation, teamwork, leadership, communication and time management can easily be evidenced from the workshop.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

Very good value for money. Considering it was a full day of activities.

Highly recommended. Great activity for Latymer Upper School students, providing an ideal opportunity to develop both their creative and transferable skills.

Any other comments that may be useful for other schools to read when considering this course?

This is an activity that all our students engaged with well. During lockdown they had missed out on so many things across Latymer Upper School calendar and this was such an excellent programme to make up for this.

About Latymer Upper School

Latymer Upper School is a coeducational public school in Hammersmith, London, England, between King Street and the River Thames. The school can be traced to a charity school for boys founded by the Edward Latymer in 1624. It moved to its present site in 1863 and in the mid-20th century became a direct grant grammar school. It has been independent since. It remained single-sex until Sixth-Form admissions were opened to girls in 1996; the remainder of the school became coeducational in the first decade of the 21st century.
Latymer Upper School have been offering a rigorous and stimulating education to bright children for nearly 400 years. As one of the leading co-educational day schools in the country, it continues to offer today’s pupils a life-changing education. Latymer Upper school’s ethos of social inclusivity is as strong today as it was in 1624 when Edward Latymer, a prosperous lawyer,  left part of his wealth for the clothing and education of “eight poore boyes” from Hammersmith. Edward Latymer’s vision remains firmly at the heart of the school – although we now teach rather more than those original eight Hammersmith boys. The Latymer of today consists of a vibrant student body of 1,400 girls and boys from all walks of life.

The course looked great and I was really confident that our students would enjoy the experience. I was slightly apprehensive that it would work well digitally, even though the links and resources provided were excellent.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

Absolutely amazing course! Both staff and students thoroughly enjoyed it and go lots of new skills from it. Even though the weather wasn’t great, that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm the students showed. Cannot wait for next year – the year 7 students are already excited!

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

Yes – the online/digital course was great value for money, especially during these difficult times for schools.

Just join in the fun and book the course – absolutely fantastic and especially with an Oscars Evening attached to it.

About Brambletye School

Brambletye School is a coeducational day and boarding preparatory school in East Grinstead, West Sussex. It was founded as a small boys’ boarding school in Kent between the world wars. The school moved to West Sussex and had since become coeducational.

Combination of traditional values with modern sensibilities makes Brambletye School a very special to be. It enables pupils to thrive as they learn and play, Brambletye’s teachers love their work as they encourage and support and parents feel pride and peace of mind as they see their children flourish and explore their abilities.
Brambletye School cultivated the traditional values of good manners, respect and kindness to all pupils. This is an education which focuses on developing the whole person in a beautiful and historic setting.  Brambletye School have thought hard about how to prepare children for a future which may look quite different from today’s world. School encourages and inspire pupils to be emotionally intelligent and adaptable.
Brambletye show pupils how to be the best people they can be, creatively, academically and physically. We hope that when parents visit the school or when the children tell you about Brambletye, there will be the spirit; the character, the history and the spark that makes Brambletye School different.
At Brambletye pupils have the time and space to explore their abilities, ask questions, develop their interests and their friendships. The children leave Brambletye as confident, happy and well-adjusted young people who work hard, have a love of learning, enjoy drama, games and music and play a part in some of the many societies and hobbies. They are in possession of a solid foundation on which they can build as they progress through the rest of their education.
Brambletye education is focused on the individual. Every child is encouraged to find the area or subject in which they can excel, building their confidence and self-esteem. Much further down the line, School will prepare each child for their chosen senior school. Brambletye School aim to inspire an understanding of the wisdom of the past and the technology of tomorrow’s world and to strive to foster a strong and independent work ethic.
A love of learning. Reading is a cornerstone of life at Brambletye. It is believed that through books Brambletye pupils expand their horizons, develop empathy and improve their attention spans. A Brambletye education will inspire the skill of creative thinking, which will be in much demand across all disciplines, from Science to the Arts.
A sense of community. Brambletye is a school run along family lines and it has a deep sense of sharing and support in each other. Children learn to celebrate other pupils’ success as well as their own and to respect and be kind to those around them. Through the House system, Tutor Groups and Boarding Houses, a culture of looking after each other is developed with children mixing and making friends across age groups. The children’s happiness and security are school’s prime concern.
A sense of self: Children become individuals who are not only talented and high achieving, but who are also generous of spirit, curious about the world and its inhabitants, alive to its possibilities and engaged with their role in it. Their balanced perspective on life allows them to feel at ease with others and happy to be themselves.
Beyond ourselves: We teach children about their role in both local and the wider community and to we aim help them become responsible citizens with an understanding of how they can make a difference to people.

I am not hugely into performing arts and I was with a year group that I didn’t know that well. I feared that I would be spending the whole day “chivvying” the two groups I was looking after to do what they were supposed to be doing instead of messing around all day.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

Almost every student enjoyed and got something useful out of the day, even if it was learning some of the secrets of filming that they watch all the time! The films were genuinely impressive, far beyond what I initially imagined which is a credit to both the course and the students involved.

I have been involved in numerous days similar to this over my 20+ years of teaching and this is one of the best I have experienced. It relies on the enthusiasm of the students but most would be enthused by it and teachers just need to be there for support, no more.

Any other comments that may be useful for other schools to read when considering this course?

I watched all the video lessons beforehand and this was very useful as I knew what was coming up. As a teacher you are there to advise and the students actually really appreciate the teacher involvement; ultimately though this is an opportunity for the students to produce something almost entirely independently so let them do that.

About Roedean School

Roedean School is an independent day and boarding school founded in 1885 in Roedean Village on the outskirts of Brighton, East Sussex, England, and governed by Royal Charter. It is for girls aged 11 to 18. The campus is situated near the Sussex Downs, on a cliff overlooking Brighton Marina and the English Channel.
Roedean school is a wonderful school where pupils have the chance to grow up at your own pace, in beautiful surroundings, and let their talents and imagination run free. Few schools in the country enjoy such an inspirational location so close to the sea and a national park, and the accommodation and facilities here are exceptional. Roedean is a school where students flourish.
The girls perform exceptionally well academically, with every girl achieving her best.  Their successes are the result of their curiosity and intellectual engagement, as well as their developing self-confidence and maturity. Making learning exciting and memorable lies at the heart of a Roedean education. However, academic results are not the sole success criteria:  along with other girls aged from 11 to 18, many from Sussex and London, and others from over thirty different countries, they enjoy a holistic education, and be inspired as much by the world outside the classroom as the world within it in. At Roedean, every aspect of school life complements the others, and it is precisely this rounded education which produces independent and creative young women who will make their mark in the world.
Roedean school is growing in number, and new students joining a school which is dynamic and vibrant, with space to breathe and think. It is an extraordinary school – we hope that all students will enjoy our school, but we believe that nothing can better a visit to get to know the girls, staff, and school first-hand.

I really should not have worried about not being up to the task! Everything is laid out in the videos and the pupils all understood every instruction and I did not need to explain or replay anything, they focused, engaged and then produced.

Yes. A full day of content – the pupils were on task all day and needed very little teacher intervention. Our job was to enjoy and encourage.

This course was such a special day for the students at The Oratory School. It did not feel like a day in school for them at all but a real end of term treat.

Any other comments that may be useful for other schools to read when considering this course?

This was a fabulous course and I am so glad we participated. The day runs like clockwork and pupils produce high quality films from the first hour and are constantly learning and practising new skills. At the end of the day my pupils were asking if we could have another day of film school tomorrow! The course is accessible to all ages and abilities and encourages coeducation and collaboration. if you get the opportunity to run a one day film school, take it!

About The Oratory School

The Oratory School is a Co-educational independent Roman Catholic day and boarding school for pupils aged 11–18 located in Woodcote, north-west of Reading. Founded in 1859 by Saint John Henry Newman. The Oratory has historical ties to the Birmingham Oratory and the London Oratory School. Although a separate entity from the nearby Oratory Preparatory School, it shares a common history. Saint John Henry Newman founded the school with the intention of providing boys with a Roman Catholic alternative to Eton College. The school is “an active choice for families looking for a small, nurturing environment… Parents tell us – ‘it’s like a new school’; ‘we all want to be on board… With excellent leadership and now girls on board, too, The Oratory seems to be thriving.”
The Oratory has received the highest grade of ‘Excellent’ for both Independent Schools Inspectorate categories: pupils’ academic & other achievements and pupils’ personal development. It states the following: “Pupils say that they are encouraged to be ambitious about their academic achievements, including their public examination targets… The school reinforces this through a traditional and academically challenging curriculum, within which pupils are given a wide choice of subjects.” Also “(Pupils) enjoy strong relationships with their peer group as well as teaching and boarding staff. The school motto “Heart Speaks to Heart” is enacted daily.”
The Oratory School is unique Boarding and Day Catholic School for Boys and Girls aged 11 to 18, just outside Reading, which combines strong academic results with a supportive family ethos. It is genuinely an all-round school and we believe in nurturing pupils to achieve their very best in whatever it is they set out to do.
