High March School

Mark Gater

Deputy Head

How would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

7
of 10
Prior to the course, even though communication was excellent and the example materials were well made and informative, we were a little concerned about our own lack of experience within this area.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10
of 10
The course was excellent and our pupils had an absolute ball! The materials are of high quality and lead you through the process, enabling everyone to produce something to be proud of.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

The course is excellent value for money. In addition, pupils can access the materials for whole year! They are also flexible enough for a much larger project to be undertaken.

The course is of high quality and is incredibly flexible in its delivery – from a single day to two weeks, over full or part days. Elements of the course can be extended to suit pupil preferences/interests/skills and amount of curriculum integration – scriptwriting, screenplay creation, storyboarding, prop making, editing and reshooting etc. In addition, the assigning of specific roles within the groups fostered a team-building approach.

About High March School

High March School is situated in Ledborough Lane, Beaconsfield, adjoining Penn Road, in three attractive houses set in four acres of grounds. Facilities include a state of the art 20 metre indoor, heated swimming pool, a well-equipped Gymnasium as well as specialist Science, Music, Art and Design and Technology and Drama suites.
Recent refurbishments include large extensions to the Art Room and Science Laboratory and re-landscaping of all the outside space at Upper School to include a new Adventure Playground, new netball courts and an outside learning classroom. The playground at Junior House has also undergone a transformation and now has a wonderful, new playground and landscaped natural environment incorporating a theme of British wildlife.

History

In 1926, Miss Warr and Miss Perkins bought a house called ‘High March’, just opposite the duckpond in Station Road, Beaconsfield, and opened a school for just twenty children. Thus, High March came into being. Only a year later, the school had outgrown its premises and the Founder Headmistresses moved their school to 23, Ledborough Lane, the site of Junior House today. Five years later, the Misses Warr and Perkins purchased 3, Ledborough Lane, where Upper School is located today, to support the school’s flourishing growth.
By 1948, High March had expanded to take about one hundred children and when the decision was taken by the Misses Warr and Perkins to sell the School, Mr and Mrs Anderson, the grandparents of the current owners, were able to realise their dream of establishing a school where high standards would be achieved against a backdrop of kindness and friendship.

Aims and Ethos

High March is a very happy and thriving independent day school for girls aged from three to eleven, in which every child is truly valued for her contribution and encouraged to grow in confidence. The aim of the School is to provide a nurturing environment and the means for the full development of every child under our care. Great attention is paid to the progress and happiness of every child.

Structure of High March School

The School is divided into two sections: Junior House takes girls from three to seven (Nursery to Year 2) whilst Upper School includes girls from seven to eleven (Years 3 to 6). There are two parallel classes in each year group and they are generally limited to a maximum of twenty girls. A maximum of eight boys enter the Nursery for a period of one year only.
The Headmistress is supported by a Senior Management Team and by well-qualified, caring and dedicated staff and an experienced Board of Governors.
High March is dedicated to Child Protection, Safeguarding, Safer Recruitment and promoting the welfare of children.

Filmmaking seems quite a close knit industry which is hard to get into (I could be wrong!) I think this exposure helps to breakdown that facade and show it is a viable career path for anyone.

How would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

The course and content seemed professionally executed and engaging, but I wasn’t sure if it would suit my purposes.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10
of 10
The course was ideal: I was able to break it down easily into a series of lessons and it allowed for differentiation, both in terms of ability and resources, meaning that all students were involved in active learning.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

10
of 10
It wasn’t just that the course was engaging (both in terms of film history/theory, but also in relation to practical lessons), but I was also reassured to have expert support on the end of a phone or email. Ed also went above and beyond, by taking part in student interviews as a professional film director and by being a judge in our student film festival.

The course looked great and I was really confident that our students would enjoy the experience. I was slightly apprehensive that it would work well digitally, even though the links and resources provided were excellent.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

Absolutely amazing course! Both staff and students thoroughly enjoyed it and go lots of new skills from it. Even though the weather wasn’t great, that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm the students showed. Cannot wait for next year – the year 7 students are already excited!

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

Yes – the online/digital course was great value for money, especially during these difficult times for schools.

Absolutely no negatives and the course would be great for any school, any age group.

Any other comments that may be useful for other schools to read when considering this course?

Just join in the fun and book the course – absolutely fantastic and especially with an Oscars Evening attached to it.

About Brambletye School

Brambletye School is a coeducational day and boarding preparatory school in East Grinstead, West Sussex. It was founded as a small boys’ boarding school in Kent between the world wars. The school moved to West Sussex and had since become coeducational.

Combination of traditional values with modern sensibilities makes Brambletye School a very special to be. It enables pupils to thrive as they learn and play, Brambletye’s teachers love their work as they encourage and support and parents feel pride and peace of mind as they see their children flourish and explore their abilities.
Brambletye School cultivated the traditional values of good manners, respect and kindness to all pupils. This is an education which focuses on developing the whole person in a beautiful and historic setting.  Brambletye School have thought hard about how to prepare children for a future which may look quite different from today’s world. School encourages and inspire pupils to be emotionally intelligent and adaptable.
Brambletye show pupils how to be the best people they can be, creatively, academically and physically. We hope that when parents visit the school or when the children tell you about Brambletye, there will be the spirit; the character, the history and the spark that makes Brambletye School different.
At Brambletye pupils have the time and space to explore their abilities, ask questions, develop their interests and their friendships. The children leave Brambletye as confident, happy and well-adjusted young people who work hard, have a love of learning, enjoy drama, games and music and play a part in some of the many societies and hobbies. They are in possession of a solid foundation on which they can build as they progress through the rest of their education.
Brambletye education is focused on the individual. Every child is encouraged to find the area or subject in which they can excel, building their confidence and self-esteem. Much further down the line, School will prepare each child for their chosen senior school. Brambletye School aim to inspire an understanding of the wisdom of the past and the technology of tomorrow’s world and to strive to foster a strong and independent work ethic.
A love of learning. Reading is a cornerstone of life at Brambletye. It is believed that through books Brambletye pupils expand their horizons, develop empathy and improve their attention spans. A Brambletye education will inspire the skill of creative thinking, which will be in much demand across all disciplines, from Science to the Arts.
A sense of community. Brambletye is a school run along family lines and it has a deep sense of sharing and support in each other. Children learn to celebrate other pupils’ success as well as their own and to respect and be kind to those around them. Through the House system, Tutor Groups and Boarding Houses, a culture of looking after each other is developed with children mixing and making friends across age groups. The children’s happiness and security are school’s prime concern.
A sense of self: Children become individuals who are not only talented and high achieving, but who are also generous of spirit, curious about the world and its inhabitants, alive to its possibilities and engaged with their role in it. Their balanced perspective on life allows them to feel at ease with others and happy to be themselves.
Beyond ourselves: We teach children about their role in both local and the wider community and to we aim help them become responsible citizens with an understanding of how they can make a difference to people.

Hugh Randolph

Head of Science

How would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

6

I was a little anxious because the expertise that YFA always brings to their presentations is a big part of why the sessions are such fun. The presenters have real film-making experience which they share with the children. I am a big fan of Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode but that is not really the same thing!

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10
of 10
The day itself ran extremely well – a little bit longer than when the YFA visited. 8.30 to 17.30 with very little slack. We watched the videos on a large, shared screen rather than individually because then I could control the timings and make sure that everyone was on task. This was not something the kids had signed up for – it was imposed upon them by the Leavers’ program so I was very relieved that they all seemed to engage with it so willingly. There was plenty to do and the material was great.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

I don’t know what it cost – I just ran the day! I have not heard any complaints.
