How would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

It is always tricky to know how pupils will react and cope to working independently and through an online course.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10

The pupils all absolutely loved it.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

Yes – they completed their movies, but as they can access their accounts for a year they can continue learning and making things at home.

Filmmaking seems quite a close knit industry which is hard to get into (I could be wrong!) I think this exposure helps to breakdown that facade and show it is a viable career path for anyone.

About St Margaret’s school

St Margaret’s school is an independent school for girls between the ages of 4 and 16. There are 171 girls and 25 teachers in the St Margaret’s family.
At St Margaret’s School it is not only the tallest, most athletic girls who represent the school at netball, or the most extrovert who get the speaking roles in plays. Everyone is valued, and St Margaret’s encourage and celebrate excellence and enthusiasm in equally high measure. Every girl is involved in the life and experiences that the school has to offer.
St Margaret’s girls’ exam results are excellent, with on average about 2 out of every 3 GCSEs taken graded A* or A.
The school has become expert at teaching girls since 1884. As we rarely advertise, almost all our girls come here through word of mouth. If you haven’t arrived here through a personal recommendation, you may wish to read an independent review of the school from the current Good Schools Guide or St Margaret’s school 2014 Inspection Report. St Margaret’s school is understandably pleased with both but, as any current parent will tell you, there is really no substitute for coming to see St Margaret’s school in person. What should be immediately apparent to anyone visiting the school is this: small class sizes, a culture of learning, and an environment in which treating each other with respect and kindness is the norm, not an aim.

The course and content seemed professionally executed and engaging, but I wasn’t sure if it would suit my purposes.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

10
of 10
The course was ideal: I was able to break it down easily into a series of lessons and it allowed for differentiation, both in terms of ability and resources, meaning that all students were involved in active learning.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

10
of 10
It wasn’t just that the course was engaging (both in terms of film history/theory, but also in relation to practical lessons), but I was also reassured to have expert support on the end of a phone or email. Ed also went above and beyond, by taking part in student interviews as a professional film director and by being a judge in our student film festival.

I wondered how the online workshop would work and how the students would engage. I needn’t of worried.

How satisfied were you with the course – and why?

9

An excellent day for the students and incredibly easy for tutors to deliver. The students loved learning about the history of film and techniques and then transferring that knowledge into making their own 2 minute film. The transferable skills of organisation, teamwork, leadership, communication and time management can easily be evidenced from the workshop.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

Very good value for money. Considering it was a full day of activities.

Highly recommended. Great activity for Latymer Upper School students, providing an ideal opportunity to develop both their creative and transferable skills.

Any other comments that may be useful for other schools to read when considering this course?

This is an activity that all our students engaged with well. During lockdown they had missed out on so many things across Latymer Upper School calendar and this was such an excellent programme to make up for this.

About Latymer Upper School

Latymer Upper School is a coeducational public school in Hammersmith, London, England, between King Street and the River Thames. The school can be traced to a charity school for boys founded by the Edward Latymer in 1624. It moved to its present site in 1863 and in the mid-20th century became a direct grant grammar school. It has been independent since. It remained single-sex until Sixth-Form admissions were opened to girls in 1996; the remainder of the school became coeducational in the first decade of the 21st century.
Latymer Upper School have been offering a rigorous and stimulating education to bright children for nearly 400 years. As one of the leading co-educational day schools in the country, it continues to offer today’s pupils a life-changing education. Latymer Upper school’s ethos of social inclusivity is as strong today as it was in 1624 when Edward Latymer, a prosperous lawyer,  left part of his wealth for the clothing and education of “eight poore boyes” from Hammersmith. Edward Latymer’s vision remains firmly at the heart of the school – although we now teach rather more than those original eight Hammersmith boys. The Latymer of today consists of a vibrant student body of 1,400 girls and boys from all walks of life.
