Tatiana Epaillard

Assistant Deputy Head

How was it running the course in school – did you face any challenges?

Smooth and straightforward. The online guide and checklist were very useful. Help was available by emails and on the phone which was very reassuring.

What was the balance like between screen-watching and practical activity?

Excellent. Interesting presentation to start with. Practical activities were well explained in the video clips. Teachers leading the activities throughout the day found it really easy.

What was your/your pupils’ favourite part, and why?

Filming was definitely our pupils’ favourite part – working together, all having specific roles to play. Teachers were impressed by the films we watched the day after.

What educational benefits do you think the course has?

Teamwork, being able to communicate with their peers, learning new practical skills, creativity.

Would you do it again?

Definitely – online, if we can’t have people from outside on our premises due to the pandemic.

Gareth Evans

Assistant Principal

What were your expectations of the ODFS and did it meet or exceed these?

If I am honest I had reservations as to how the students would fair with little input from me. However the resources were excellent and the course was brilliant. These were the words of my students. It gave them something different to do and I was amazed what they produced considering many of them were in isolation at the time they made their films and had to be multiple characters, camera operators and directors. In short it exceeded.

Was it different from other remote/online screen-based learning – if so, how?

It was very user friendly. The students needed no input from me which was great. What I loved was it promoted independent creative skills which is sometimes hard to achieve in the classroom.

How enthusiastic were pupils – did they do anything special?

Very – they learnt loads and loved the creative element. What impressed me was their work stood up to the work of BTEC students who get far more creative input. It also showed them what can be achieved with an IPHONE. You don’t need fancy equipment.

Did you screen their films, and what was the reaction?

Yes they did class presentations and screenings with feedback from their peers. We also screened them to the teachers and had an award ceremony.

What would you say to someone considering ODFS but wary of more screen-based activity?

Do it. It gives the teachers a screen break and the students loved it.

Katherine Saunt

Head of Second Form

What were your expectations of the One Day Film School and did it meet or exceed these?

I had heard lots of good things about the One Day Film School as we have used them in the 6th Form for many years. I was slightly wary that it would be quite time consuming for the teachers, but in fact, the boys got on with the tasks themselves and far exceeded my (already high) expectations.

Was it different from other remote/online screen-based learning – if so, how?

Yes it was different – a real opportunity for the pupils to work closely together in teams despite their physical distance. They were also able to work on their creative skills and enjoyed the independence given to them.

How enthusiastic were pupils – did they do anything special?

The year group absolutely loved this task. Every group produced a film, and most importantly had enjoyed shooting it, editing it and the whole process. There were a number of excellent films at the end of it!

Did you screen their films, and what was the reaction?

Yes they did class presentations and screenings with feedback from their peers. We also screened them to the teachers and had an award ceremony.

What would you say to someone considering ODFS but wary of more screen-based activity?

Yes – each form group watched all of their films and then voted on their favourite. The boys were really complimentary about each other’s work.

About City of London School
