I thought the communication and support provided prior to the course was excellent. No question was too small and Ed was really responsive and happy to help. It looked like a great course and I was certain my pupils would gain a lot from completing it.

The girls had a great day. The videos were engaging and well put together. The structure of the course was well thought through and has led to some great quality pieces being produced.

Did you feel the course was good value for money – if so, why?

This was exactly the kind of thing that the girls needed. It was educational and fun. It helped them to develop some new skills. The nature of the challenge meant that each pupil could find their role that they were comfortable with.

About St Catherine’s School

St Catherine’s School is a Catholic independent school for girls in Twickenham, London. The school is next to the River Thames and about two-thirds of a mile (1.1 km) from both Strawberry Hill and Twickenham railway stations.
Founded in a large house near Twickenham Green, St Catherine’s then moved to Orford Lodge (now demolished) and in 1919 to Pope’s Villa, on the site of Alexander Pope’s original villa. By 1961 it was recognised by the Ministry of Education as a grammar school. In 1948 the school bought a house on Cross Deep known as The Lawn, where it is currently located.
Up until 1991 the school was home to a number of Sisters who were also members of the staff. They moved out and the school became a charitable trust managed by lay persons in 1992. It is the only independent Roman Catholic girls’ school in the Richmond area and is within the Archdiocese of Westminster. It remains a Roman Catholic foundation but takes students of all religious affiliations. It has a preparatory school(entry typically at three-years-old) and a senior school (entry at eleven-years-old). Nearly one-third of the pupils are of minority ethnic groups, but more than ninety per cent of the pupils have English as a first language.

Out of 10, how would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

I would rate my expectations of the course as a 9. I didn’t have much experience with leading a film program but after you provided the Teacher’s Survival Guide, I was able to integrate my own teaching style into the course.

Out of 10, how satisfied were you with the course?

My satisfaction with the course is rated as a 10 because my students tapped into levels of creativity that they weren’t previously aware of and thoroughly enjoyed progressing through the film lessons.

Please rate the course in the following areas (1 – VERY POOR, 2 – POOR, 3- SATISFACTORY, 4 – GOOD, 5 – EXCELLENT) as well as any general comments:

*   Screen time Vs Practical activity – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   Age-appropriateness of content – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   Learning new skills – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   Quality of pupil films – rated as 5 (excellent)

Please rate the course in the following areas (1 – VERY POOR, 2 – POOR, 3- SATISFACTORY, 4 – GOOD, 5 – EXCELLENT):

*   Film History – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   Fight Choreography – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   Camera – rated as 5 (excellent)
*   10-Shot Film Challenge – rated as 5 (excellent)

What other aspects of filmmaking are you interested in (not covered by the course) if any?

Thanks to this course, my students understand some of the foundational tools needed to be a successful film director. However, since my students mostly created social justice-themed clips, I’d love for them to learn more techniques for creating films that promote awareness, justice, and action.

Vanessa Viirret

Year 9 Dean

Out of 10, how would you rate your expectations prior to running the course – and why?

7/10. It looks really great on the website and the instructions seem really clear. My concerns were that the kids might not buy into it (because they’re at that stage where they are too cool for everything), how we were going to manage it with social distancing/mask requirements, and if the foley sound stuff would still work despite not being able to supply fruit for them to hit.

Out of 10, how satisfied were you with the course?

10. Extremely. It was so much fun for the students and relatively easy from the teaching perspective. One student who usually does not enjoy school said it was the best day at school he had ever had.

Did you feel the course was good value for money?

Very much so.

Teamwork, being able to communicate with their peers, learning new practical skills, creativity.

Would you do it again?

Definitely – online, if we can’t have people from outside on our premises due to the pandemic.
